Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been arrested by the Manchester Police on suspicion of rape and assault. On Sunday, his girlfriend Harriot Robinson released images and an audiotape of both of them on her Instagram account which were later removed.
The Manchester United board has issued a statement suspending Greenwood until further notice. The 20-year old would take no part in the upcoming training sessions and matchday squads. In an earlier statement, they made it clear that they are of the images and allegations on the forward.
The statement in full reads: "We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not make any further comments until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”
The Police have confirmed that a man in his 20's has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
"Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence," the statement read.
"An investigation was launched and following enquiries, we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Inquiries are ongoing."
GMP issued another statement on Monday, adding: “Detectives have been granted additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who is being held on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.
“Inquiries are ongoing and the victim is being offered specialist support. We remind people to avoid any commentary or sharing of images that could compromise the victim's right to lifelong anonymity, or risk prejudicing a live investigation with active proceedings.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and David de Gea are among the high-profile players who have reportedly unfollowed Greenwood on Instagram. Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Fred are also among those who have shunned the 20-year old.
