Manchester City battle past PSG to book their place in the last 16

  • Manchester City came from behind to sink PSG in an absolute thriller at the Etihad Stadium.

  • Goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus in the second half sealed the comeback for City.

  • Kylian Mbappe gave the visitors a crucial lead early in the second half.

  • City sealed their place at the top of their group with this win while PSG have to settle for second.

Jack Grealish and Phil Foden missed out due to injuries while De Bruyne tested positive for Covid-positive. Oleksandr Zinchenko got a chance in midfield while Bernardo Silva was deployed as a false nine by Guardiola.

Superstars Neymar, Messi and Mbappe all started for PSG and former United midfielder Ander Herrera came in for Marco Verrati. First choice centre back pairing Kimpembe and Marquinhos returned after not playing at the weekend.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Dias, Stones, Cancelo, Rodri, Gundogan, Zinchenko, Mahrez, Silva, Sterling.

PSG XI: Navas, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Nuno Mendes, Herrera, Paredes, Gueye, Messi, Mbappe, Neymar.

FIRST HALF: City dominate but to no avail

City had all the possession in the first half and they created plenty of chances. The first proper chance in the game fell for City. Rodri rose highest to meet Mahrez's free-kick but the ball is headed over on the goal-line by Kimpembe. Then Riyad Mahrez was teed up by Bernardo Silva whose curling effort was deflected by Hakimi.

Mauricio Pochettino, who is one of the favourites for the United job, couldn't set up his team well as they struggled defensively against a well oiled City team. Gundogan found space on the right hand side and sent a low cross which was met by Sterling who passed it onto Zinchenko but his shot was blocked by Marquinhos.

Gundogan had City's best chance of the first half as he latched onto the clearance from Nuno Mendes and his shot hit the post. PSG had a great opportunity to take the lead just before halftime through a quick counterattack. Stones was caught on the ball at the halfway line and Neymar put Mbappe through. But the Frenchman sent his curling shot over the bar.

SECOND HALF: City fight back after Mbappe's opener

Even though City dominated, PSG landed the first blow as Kylian Mbappe scored past Ederson. Messi played a one-two with Herrera and his cross took a deflection and fell for the Frenchman who scored from close range.

City was clearly the better side throughout the game but couldn't apply the finishing touch. They continued to create chances as Mahrez dribbled through the right flank and fired a shot which was saved by Navas. City's pressure paid off as Raheem Sterling poked in a cross from Kyle Walker to equalize.

Neymar had a wonderful opportunity to restore PSG's lead as he could only find the side netting after a one-two with Di Maria. City then took a deserved lead through Gabriel Jesus, who came on for Zinchenko. Mahrez's diagonal pass was crossed in by Sterling and Jesus tapped it in. PSG couldn't fight back from there as City held on for the win.

City host West Ham in their next game on Sunday while PSG have a trip to St-Etienne.
