The BCCI has released an 18-member squad for the ODI series against South Africa. Newly appointed ODI skipper Rohit Sharma will miss the series as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during a training session in Mumbai which kept him out of the Test series as well.
India's selection panel chairman Chetan Sharma said "We thought that Rohit should do rehab and work on his fitness. There is so much cricket and no player wants to be injured. So, we thought that with the T20 World Cup nearing, we should ensure that Rohit is fully fit. We had a good chat with Rohit".
KL Rahul has been appointed as the interim captain for the series and Jasprit Bumrah as his deputy.
Virat Kohli has also been named in the squad squashing away rumours that he will miss the ODI leg of the tour. Mohammed Shami has been rested owing to workload management.
Ravichandran Ashwin has returned to the squad who last played an ODI in 2017. Venkatesh Iyer and Rururaj Gaikwad received maiden call-ups to the ODI side after making their debuts in the shortest format against New Zealand.
Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar have returned after recovering from injuries with Shreyas making his Test debut as well.
The all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel haven't recovered from their injuries sustained in the Test series against New Zealand. India last played an ODI against Sri Lanka in July 2021.
