Chelsea decimate Juventus 4-0 to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League

  • Chelsea showed their title credentials by thrashing Italian giants Juventus 4-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

  • Goals from Trevor Chalobah, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Timo Werner were enough to seal the win.

  • They go top of Group H and have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League.

  • Juventus are second and have suffered their heaviest defeat in the competition.

Chelsea made two changes to their side that won against Leicester at the weekend. Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech come in the place of Mount and Havertz. Romelu Lukaku was only fit enough to start on the bench after he suffered an ankle injury.

Juve also made two changes to their side that beat Lazio. Cuadrado moved into the back four with the absence of Danilo. Alex Sandro and Bentacur replaced Luca Pelligrini.

Chelsea XI: Mendy; Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger; James, Jorginho, Kante, Chilwell; Ziyech, Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi.

Juventus XI: Szczesny; Cuadrado, Bonucci, De Ligt, Sandro; Bentancur, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot; Chiesa, Morata.

FIRST HALF: Chalobah gives Chelsea the lead

Chelsea dominated from the get-go and should have taken the lead in the 2nd minute itself. Kante made a good run down the right byline and delivered a good cross but Hudson Odoi's header was blocked and it fell for Chilwell who missed his kick.

Trevor Chalobah scored on his Champions League debut to give Chelsea the advantage. Ziyech's corner was headed down by Rudiger and it fell for Chalobah who made no mistake. The Juventus players were not happy as they argued that the ball came off Rudiger's hand but VAR didn't overrule it.

The Old Lady had a wonderful opportunity to equalize against the run of play. Locatelli's through ball was chipped over the keeper by Alvaro Morata. The Spanish striker thought he had scored on his return to Stamford Bridge but was denied by 37-year old Thiago Silva, who cleared it inches off the line.

That was the only decent chance in the game as Chelsea dominated further. Reece James's powerful strike was saved by Szczęsny while Antonio Rudiger sent his header wide. The Blues went into the break leading by a goal.

SECOND HALF: The Blues further increase their dominance

Chelsea actually increased the tempo further in the 2nd half as they looked to increase their advantage. Hudson Odoi made a good run down the left-hand side but his shot was blocked by De Ligt while Thiago Silva sent his header straight at Szczęsny.

The Blues increased their lead as Reece James scored his 5th goal of the season. Chilwell's cross was cleared by De Ligt but it fell for James who lashed it home. Chelsea put the game to bed with a third goal three minutes later. Loftus Cheek, who replaced Kante, slid past the defence brilliantly and fed Hudson Odoi who scored. Timo Werner who came on for Pulisic added a fourth in the 90th minute to complete the humiliation.

Chilwell and Kante suffer injuries

The only bad news for Chelsea was the injuries to key players Chilwell and Kante where both suffered from ankle issues. Kante was replaced by Loftus Cheek after 37 minutes while Azpelicueta came on for Chilwell.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel provided updates on the injury situation. "[Chilwell] has a sharp pain in the knee. N'Golo as well. He twisted his knee a little bit, we will tell you tomorrow more when both will be examined," Tuchel told BT Sport after the match.

"These are very sad because N'Golo was fantastic until this moment when he went off. Chilly is in a fantastic moment, so so important and for him personally so so strong, so we hope for the best."

Chelsea invites Manchester United to Stamford Bridge in their next game while the Old Lady host rivals Atalanta.
